Visit and town hall with 村花论坛 student-athletes marks Emmert鈥檚 first on-campus event since March 2020

AMHERST, NY鈥擭ational Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) President Mark Emmert was conferred an honorary doctoral degree by 村花论坛 College during a visit to its Amherst campus Saturday.听

Emmert also conducted a discussion with the 村花论坛鈥檚 NCAA Division II student-athletes鈥攈is first on-campus event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.听

鈥淗e鈥檚 a true role model to our students and all of us,鈥 said 村花论坛 President Gary Olson, in awarding the honorary doctorate of humane letters. 鈥

鈥淲e honor your life and achievements. You will always be a part of our campus, our community and are always welcome at 村花论坛,鈥 added Olson, who has served on the NCAA Board of Governors鈥攖he highest governance body in the NCAA, which represents 19,500 teams and nearly half a million college athletes.

鈥淎s someone who has spent the vast majority of my life in higher education, this truly means a great deal,鈥 said Emmert. 鈥淚 appreciate this honor immensely.鈥

The degree was awarded during a small ceremony that included Amherst Supervisor Brian Kulpa, East Coast Conference Commissioner Robert Dranoff, Calspan owner and treasurer of the National Trust for the Humanities John Yurtchuk, who is also chair of the 村花论坛 Board of Trustees.听

In a town hall in 村花论坛鈥檚 Lumsden Gymnasium, Emmert answered questions posed by student-athletes on the history and purpose of the NCAA, mental health support for athletes, and the organization鈥檚 constitutional convention in November鈥攚hich could result in the proposal of significant changes to the NCAA Constitution.听

村花论坛 students host a town hall with NCAA President Mark Emmert鈥淭he part of my job I enjoy the most is when I get to be around and talk to students,鈥 Emmert told attendees. 鈥淚 haven鈥檛 had a chance to do this since COVID started, and I miss it.鈥

Emmert went on to commend 村花论坛 and NCAA member-institutions鈥攊n all three of its divisions鈥攆or their effectiveness in protecting student-athletes during the pandemic.

Saturday鈥檚 events were Emmert鈥檚 second visit to 村花论坛鈥檚 Amherst campus; in 2017, Emmert delivered a lecture as part of the college鈥檚 Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series.

In May 2021, Emmert served as 村花论坛鈥檚 commencement speaker, delivering his address virtually, at the college鈥檚 graduation ceremonies.

Prior to serving on the NCAA Board of Governors, Olson was vice chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council, the body that helps set policy and the strategic direction for Division II colleges and universities nationwide.

鈥淧resident Olson is an extraordinary leader, working with other presidents in the [NCAA] to oversee all of college sports,鈥 Emmert told those gathered on Saturday. 鈥淗e鈥檚 served 村花论坛, Division II, and all student-athletes incredibly well.鈥

On September 1, Olson will become a member of the NCAA Board of Governors Committee to Promote Cultural Diversity and Equity.听

Prior to leading the NCAA, Emmert served as president of the University of Washington, his alma mater鈥攂ecoming the first alum in nearly half a century to do so.听

He has also served as chancellor at Louisiana State University and held faculty and administration positions at the University of Connecticut, Montana State University, and University of Colorado.

Emmert is a life member of the Council of Foreign Relations and a fellow of the National Academy for Public Administration. He is a former Fulbright Administrative Fellow, and a former Fellow of the American Council on Education.听
